Australian Numbat population decimated. The Numbat is a beaut little marsupial that has all but been wiped out, with only a few left in small areas south of Perth. We probably couldn't pinpoint the exact damage its demise has done to the ecology of our area, but surely it hasn't gone unnoticed that we have a termite problem?
Numbt Group
Numbats are termite terminators! These little furry creatures are mostly nocturnal, depending on the movement of termites, which is its main source of food. How cool is that?! He is very vulnerable to prey and is now near-extinct here. To work at a breeding programme could also have the beneficial affects of tourism. Any interested parties out there? Council? I have included this amusing photo, but to the Numbat population, it is not funny. Feral cats, dogs, foxes, fire, have all contributed to their demise in most areas of Australia. Help - I would love to help them to be re-introduced to our region, but I am only one person. The ongoing positives may be incalculable and as yet, we don't know how much so in regards to our local ecology. Any ideas, offer of practical things - like land for sanctuary etc will be needed.
